PRESENTER:
Ross Banister has earned two theological degrees (Th.M. and D.Min) and taken graduate courses in psychology. He is certified Nationally as a Certified Drug & Alcohol Counselor II and as a Qualified Mental Health Professional in Oregon. Dr. Banister has been involved in his own recovery and served professionally over 33 years in a variety of settings including prisons, jails, non-profit and governmental agencies, church consulting and private practice. A former pastor, he feels very strongly the Christian Church is the ideal place to treat addiction. He presents A Faith Based Integrated Recovery Program: From Addiction to New Identity.
PARTICIPANTS:
Pastors, Church Leaders, Church groups, Theological Students, Addiction Treatment Professionals and Students, families and those recovering or affected by addiction (i.e.) anyone interested in Recovery Issues from a Biblical World View integrated with the social sciences, biology and neurology.
WORKSHOP CURRICULUM:
Workshops are in sequence beginning with a theoretical framework integrating principles from biology / genetics / neuroscience / psycho-social elements / and Biblical Spiritual Disciplines. These will progress to processing actual case studies, and training in intervention. Also training provided for small groups and students wanting to visit, observe, and participate in exposure weeks onsite to the ministry of First United Church and DTES in Vancouver BC. Relevant reading material will be assigned and provided.
ENDORSEMENTS:
The workshop held for staff at the First United Church shelter was extremely helpful.
. Ross has a great deal of experience and knowledge and understood the needs of the
staff. He was open minded, had great comments and started great discussions.
Nicole Hermanson Ph.D. (Community Worker)
Ross' workshop was eye-opening for members of our congregation and community.
His insight on addictions and especially his vision how churches can be holistic
refuges for addicts have made a difference in my life, in my family and in our church
family. Pastor Jim Carberry (Water's Edge Church, Birch Bay Washington)

Dr. Banister's workshops at the Oregon Coalition on Housing and
Homelessness
(OCHH) Conference 2012 were fantastic! His perspective of "dislocation" gives new
insight into the lives of people with chronic addictions experiencing homelessness.
His unique blend of non-judgmental spirituality and clinical training offers new
responses to social and public health issues.
Marisha L. Johnson (OCHH board member)
As a church that values recovery, Ross' workshop was very helpful. His expertise
in understanding addiction was incredibly insightful and empowered our team toward
greater effectiveness in helping people in our community that so desperately
desire freedom from addiction.

Knowing Ross as we pursued doctorate degrees together, I endorse his character of
integrity and his personable nature. My friendship with Dr. Banister has made a
significant impact on my ministry. But having Ross present his addictions seminar at
our church, I can also endorse the practical wealth of information he teaches to help
bring relief to a pervasive problem in society - and to churches who no longer want
to look the other way.
Pastor Jim Hofman, D.Min., Living Water of La Pine Oregon.
